16's Coach
Owen Monroy moved to Salt Lake City late in November of 2008. He graduated from Messiah College where he received his Bachelor's degree and completed a four year playing career with the men's volleyball program. Owen earned first team honors in the Mid-Atlantic Conference as an outside hitter before shifting focus to libero in his final two seasons. Monroy’s four years at Messiah remain the most successful squads in the programs 27 year history with national results of 8th, 5th, 5th, and the NIRSA DII National Championship in 2008. Owen was hired at Westminster College in 2009 during his first year on the HCVC coaching staff. His responsibilities at the collegiate level include tutoring, scouting opponents, recruiting, summer camps, offensive and defensive systems, DataVolley, and film. Monroy’s strengths are in fundamental skill tutoring and system instruction; taking a special interest in training serving, serve-receive, and attacking. Owen has become a top instructor in the Intermountain Region and was asked to lead the 2011 Select Team to the USA High Performance Championships in Tucson, Arizona. In 2010 Monroy trained and led teams to compete in the USA High Performance Beach Championships in Long Beach, California. As a full time coach, Monroy loves being in the gym as much as his players do. Between camps, clinics, private lessons, club, USA activities, and the collegiate season, Monroy is relentless in advancing his experience and understanding of the game. When asked why he keeps coming back for more, Owen's response was "I love to learn, I've discovered that I have a passion for teaching, and I am inherently competitive. Volleyball is a venue for these things and allows me to invest in the lives of others every day."
