FAQs

When is the High Country Club season?
The High Country Club season begins with tryouts in October and November.  After the tryouts, practices begin in December.  Tournaments begin in January and run through the middle of May.  Those teams that qualify for the Junior Olympic National Championship Tournament play through the beginning of July.

What ages does High Country run teams for?
High Country runs teams for ages 18 under and have had players as young as 8 on our 12 and under teams.

Where are practices held?
All High Country practices and meetings are held at the IVA Center:
                2595 W. Custer Road (1775 S.) Suite A
                SLC, UT

What is the difference between Region and Travel teams?
Region teams practice only two times a week while Travel teams practice three times a week.  Both Region and Travel teams participate in the Intermountain Volleyball Association (IVA) tournament schedule.  Travel teams also participate in out-of-state tournaments trying to qualify for the Junior Olympic National Championship Tournament (JO’s).  Only Travel teams are eligible to qualify for JO’s through the IVA tournament.  For more information, please refer to the High Country Volleyball Handbook section “Teams, Tryouts, and Registration.”

When do teams practice?
Team practice days are set the beginning of the season and do not change.  Times and days are set with the following considerations; coach’s schedule and court availability.  Region teams practice two times a week while Travel teams practice three times a week.  Practices are held Monday through Thursday.

When and where are tournaments played?
Tournaments start the beginning of January and run through the middle of May.  All tournaments are held on Fridays and Saturdays.  IVA tournaments are located within the Intermountain Region (Utah & Idaho).  Majority of tournaments are within the Wasatch Valley, though each age group should expect to play in one tournament outside of the Wasatch Front (i.e. Cedar City, Hurricane, Boise, etc.).  USAV National Qualifying tournaments take can take place Friday-Monday, so those participating could miss at least 2 days of school per travel tournament.

What is the difference between High Country and IVA?
High Country Volleyball Club is a member of the Intermountain Region, which includes Utah, Idaho and Western Wyoming.  The governing body for the Intermountain Region is the IVA, under the direction of USA Volleyball.  So, IVA is High Country’s governing body.  High Country and IVA are TWO SEPARATE entities.

What if I missed tryouts?  Can players be added to teams after the tryouts?
Players can be added after tryouts if there are available spots on teams.  Those who have missed tryouts should contact the High Country office to find out availability.

Can multi-activity athletes play?
Yes, multi-activity athletes can play club volleyball.  Although those with other activities that will interfere with practices and games may possibly not be considered for Elite Travel Teams due to the high level of commitment and competition.

What are the costs and what does that cover?
Costs for teams are found under the “Fees” tab on the main page.  Region team fees are significantly lower than Travel team fees.  Travel teams all have the same base fee and then added cost per travel tournament they choose to attend.  Fees include all tournament entry, coaching, court rental, Asics uniform package, region travel, and administration fees for the entire regular season.  Additional fees will be assessed to those teams that qualify and attend the Junior Olympic National Championship Tournament.

How is High Country different from other clubs?
High Country is one of the oldest, largest, and most renowned clubs in the Intermountain Region.  High Country also gets to call the IVA Center its home.  Unlike some clubs that have to work around other sports teams’ practice schedules, IVA caters only to volleyball.  High Country also has a full time administration to better serve our costumers’ and coaches’ needs.  All coaches are trained by our Executive Director, Kim Norman, who has more JO National appearances than any other coach currently coaching in the region.  High Country is also the only Intermountain Region club to be sponsored by the national sports apparel outfitter, Asics.
